Learning disabilities were once known as 'mental retardation', this term is no longer used. Learning disabilities are listed under psychiatric disorders. 1 to 2.5% of the total population has a learning disability.

 

An individual with a learning disability is still able to learn all the skills required to live a good quality life just like everybody else. With the right support and correct intervention a person with a learning disability could reach very high expectations. 

 

There are many different learning disabilities, hence, it is very important for all teachers to be aware of all these disabilities in order to be able to cater for each an every individual in their classroom. It is also important for parents to know certain information about their child's learning disability in order to provide the correct support for the child to reach his or her potential.
