Translocation

Translocation occurs in a mere 4% of infants with Down syndrome. Translocation occurs when only part of the chromosome 21 is found attached to the other chromosomes. The child with translocation type Down syndrome would be no different to the child with trisomy 21 type Down syndrome. It is extremely important however, to study and be aware of the chromosome pattern in the children, as either the mother or father of the child with translocation, would be a ‘carrier’ of Down syndrome.
